Your exactly right about 'it's the time that matters.' When a studio or production company is paying 30 to 40 people to work on film shoot, many of them are doing nothing for half the day. Examples being boom operators, focus pullers, etc. A mass amount of a films budget is paying them. So the faster they shoot, the less the studio has to pay them.
Now, I don't know if this is entirely true, but I've heard the Kubrick used so much film in a 'Clockwork' that the final print is only about 1% of the film he actually shot.

Nah, I'm often right. I'm just willing to admit when I am wrong. And after looking into Kubrick I discovered that I have never heard of any of his cinematographers.

I just remember reading about a famous(at the time - I don't know his name) DoP on The Killing (outrageously excluded from the Kubrick Collection, IMO). Kubrick set up a tracking shot with a wide lens and went for lunch, and when he got back the DoP had changed the lens and moved the track. Kubrick lost his rag and made the DoP change it all back. The DoP hadn't thought about Depth of Field, which made all the difference in the shot. Apparently.
cheers

PS before you all get shirty, I don't have the actual account to hand so I can't remember exactly. It's just a good story!

Being a focus puller or a boom operator might look easy but it?s still a demanding job and if you screw up one to many times- or even worse-someone THINKS you screwed up.You might never work again, especialy if it's someone like Spielberg or Lucas. Honistly,of all the "crew members" the Cops have it the easiest most of the time,as they just sit in their cars all day "wating" for something to happen.
As the why the Killing isn?t in the Kubrick collection is because the movie is owned by MGM,not Warners.

I never once said it was easy to be a boom op or focus puller... it's just a lot of money that is wasted if movie is not being shot to schedule. That's why there are assistant director's, etc. to make sure everything goes to schedule and people are not sitting around. Filmmaking is just waiting.

Dr Stranglelove is MGM i think, I'll look at the spines when I get home. Certainly, not ALL included are warner.
I don't mind about Spartacus (my wife's favourite) because I have that already.
Surely the whole point of a collection is to have all of the work, otherwise it's a selection
